Bayaya has been built around the idea of a world made from wooden toys. Recently, I have been experimenting with pushing this look a little further — away from conventional 3D rendering and towards something closer to a painted or drawn illustration.

Instead of choosing one fixed style, I made the rendering adjustable. We can gradually add stronger outlines, simplify small surface details and flatten the lighting. At one end, the world retains its detailed wooden materials and polished surfaces. At the other, the same scene starts to resemble a stylized 2D/3D illustration.

This gives us quite a large range to experiment with without changing the actual models or environments.

It may also become useful for distinguishing different parts of the game. The current Steam demo already uses a somewhat different rendering style for the more open-ended Exploration mode and for the Story mode.

The video below shows the look changing gradually between these variants.
